At the summer camp!

And… I think this is the last story of this year… I am so sorry to say goodbye to you, but I hope it is not a goodbye but a see you later!

I did not tell you that I go to a summer camp three weeks on July and August! As I told you, here in Britain we end school at mid-June and start it at the end of August. I know this can sound strange for you, but here in England the weather is very cold, and if we start school in September, maybe the good weather is already gone. So, we have to take profit of the little sun we have in August to be at school!

At first I did not want to go to any summer camp, because I did not like them. Well, actually I did not go to any summer camp in my life, until last year. I went to a summer camp in Ireland with my best friend of school, John. We did not know anybody else, and we were very afraid because we had to take an airplane and it was a long trip.

But we forgot everything once we got there! Such beautiful landscapes! We had lot of fun, and we did all kind of adventures you can imagine! Diving, climbing, routes… It is a good option not to be with your parents all summer (which can be a little bit boring), and you meet new people, people you can chat or send letters to.

And what about your summer? Are you going to do something special? Do you have exciting plans? Tell me, I want to know! And see you next year in sixth!

Do you play tennis?

The year is ending and I think I have not told you about my nine years old birthday. You know that I am a completely fanatic of tennis. I know you in Spain worship Rafael Nadal, but here in Britain our best is Andy Murray. Never mind, my parents gave me that day an envelope with something inside. I looked at them like strange, I mean, an envelope’ What kind of game can fit in an envelope? But my parents were so anxious that I opened it so quickly and… Better than any game you can imagine! Can you think what was inside the envelope?

That is it! Exactly! Three tickets for the finals of the Wimbledon Championship! I couldn’t imagine! I was going to see the best tennis players in the world!

If you do not know, the Wimbledon Championship is one of the tennis tournaments players play in the month of June. It is the oldest tennis tournament in the world, and it was first played in 1877. It is the third Grand Slam of the year, after Australia and before EEUU tournaments.

But I am not here to tell you about it, I am here to tell about my experience! I went to the finals and Andy was there, playing against Novak Djokovich. I could not imagine I was looking at them and it was not the TV! I don’t have to spoil you the end because that happens some years ago, but it was the best experience of my life.

I have played tennis since I was a child. I liked it because my father practised it, and after years watching him playing I decided I wanted to have a go and try it. And it is a very exciting sport: you have to run a lot, have good movements with the racket, and it is a very polite sport… The audience can’t talk during a tennis match!

And you? Have you ever played to tennis? How was it? Do you like any other sport? Tell me! I want to know!

In the future I will be...

When you are in High School you have a big decision to make: you have to decide what to study or, what it is the same, you have to decide which work you will have in the future. I think it is a very difficult decision! I have thought about that many times, and I still don’t have an answer.

When I was five I wanted to be cleaner. You know, those people that clean streets and wear those fashion green or yellow uniform and the most important thing… They hang on the vans and wear helmets! But when I was five I did not think about the smell of rubbish. So, now I do not want to be a cleaner.

Now I have doubts. I think I will be a doctor. I love hospitals and I like wearing that white uniform and run from one place to another. But… I do not like needles and blood, so I think I will not be a doctor or a nurse. I can not stand the blood’ smell. Disgusting!

So I think I will be… Builder maybe? You know, people that build things. Or not, better I will be an arquitect, which are people who design buildings. I will do a super house with five floors and a huge swimming pool. Yes, that would be cool.

Or… I will be cook. I love eating and chocolate is my passion. I can be a professional cook of desserts and create different recipes with chocolate: white chocolate, milk chocolate… I love sweet things! But I think I will be fat with that amount of chocolate.

So I will be policeman. Cool people wearing sunglasses, boots and that black uniform. And they drive those supercars with sirens, and everybody has to set aside when they are in a mission.

I do not know! I am confused! Can you help me? What will you be in the future? Do you have any idea? Tell me!

How was England in the past?

You know that the more you know about your country the more you know about you. I remember a history class we did not that far, when the teacher told us about some important happenings of New England in the last century, the 20th century. Actually, some of them I did not know, and they were a surprise to me. Do you want to know about them?

Three years ago we had the Olympic Games in London. But, did you know it was the third time London held the Olympic Games? First time was in 1908. London held the Olympic Games but it was not the official event side. It was Rome, but as Naples had been devastated by the Mount Vesuvius, they decided to move it to Lodon. 2008 athletes participated (1971 men and 37 women) from 22 different countries, competing in 110 events of 22 olympic sports in 110 specialities.

Four years after, in 1912, the largest ship ever built started its first and last trip from Ireland to New York. It was built in Belfast, and it was a ship that sank in the North atlantic Ocean in the early morning of 15 April 1912 after crashing with an iceberg during its voyage from Southampton, UK to New York City, US. More than 1500 passengers and crew died. The ship hit an iceberg at 11:40 pm two days after. The collision opened some compartments of the ships and filled them with water. People started to be evacuated in lifeboats, but most of them did not make it. Part of the ship remains on the sea, and since its discovery in 1985 thousands of artifacts are now in museums around the world. A famous film was launched in 1997.

Years later, in 1952, Elizabeth II of England was crowned because of her father’s death. And 63 years after she is still the Queen of England. She was born in 1926 and got married with her husband (who is still alive) in 1947. Her oldest son, Prince Charles is now 66, and will maybe never get to the throne. She is a very be-loved person among the British.

And the last fact I would like to talk to you about is related to music… Do you know the Beatles? Yes, they probably were the most famous rock band of the second mid of the 20th century. The Beatles was formed in 1960 in Liverpool. With members John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, they became the most important musicians of the rock era. Some of their hits were: Hey Jude, Let it be, All you need is love, Yellow submarine… But they did not last a lot as a group. actually just 10 years, from 1960 to 1970. John Lennon was shot in 1980. George Harrison died in 2001 by cancer. Ringo and Paul have separated careers.

And, what about in Spain? Any important fact of last century you want to tell me? I need to know about Spain!
